FEMA Might Help With Damaged Appliances From June Flooding

SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN — FEMA encouraged residents who suffered damage from June's severe storms and flooding to check their heating systems and water heaters before the cold weather arrives. FEMA might be able to help with any repairs needed to a furnace or water heater that was damaged by floodwaters. "Turn on your heat now to check that there isn't a leak, or the blower isn't working," FEMA's federal coordinating officer for the Michigan disaster recovery operation Scott Burgess said. "If there is a problem, call a licensed professional to have it inspected. If you need to repair or replace the appliance, FEMA may be able to help." Live in Detroit? For those affected can apply for assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov or through the FEMA App. You can also call 800-621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. seven days a week. The deadline for any kind of assistance is Nov. 12. Any homeowner who receives a FEMA grant for repairs, but then later discover's the whole unit needs to be replaced will have to appeal the decision for additional money. The homeowner must then submit a letter with a verified contractor's estimate for replacement of the furnace or water heater within 60 days. The grants apply to those living in the counties that were added to the Disaster Declaration, which are Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
