After 74 Years, Revered Worcester Deli Closing In October

WORCESTER, MA — A Webster Square institution will close this month after nearly three-quarters of a century in business. The family owners of Maury's Deli, 1125 Main St., announced on Facebook this week that the 74-year-old restaurant will close Oct. 16. "If you would like to get your pastrami, corned beef and roast beef before we close, your time is coming to an end," Timothy James wrote in a Wednesday Facebook post. "We would like to thank you for your support and business over the years." James added that although Maury's will close, the business is up for sale. Maury's is just the latest in a series of Worcester institutions that have decided to close. Meat lovers were shocked earlier this year when Fairway Beef downtown closed after 75 years in business due to a host of issues, including product shortages. The 40-year-old Skylite roller rink closed one year ago, and the iconic neon-decorated building just sold for $890,000 to the owners of a local smoke shop. The Greendale Mall, a newer local landmark that's been mostly vacant for years, is being torn down to construct a new Amazon sorting facility. The 237-year-old Becker College closed its doors at the end of the last school year.
