The artist: Internationally renowned marine life artist and conservationist Wyland has captured the love of people everywhere by completing over 100 marine life murals around the world, known as the Whaling Walls. Wyland is one of the most celebrated and recognized artists of our time. On his 25th birthday in 1981 Wyland completed his first Whaling Wall in Newport, Oregon on the Hotel Laguna Property.
The collector: Jeff Kaspar, a commercial fisherman, was delivering fish in Newport at that time. Seeing the magnificent mural, he was immediately captivated by the artist's ability to so accurately replicate marine life through art. Kaspar had taken up seasonal commercial fishing to pay his way through college but quickly realized his love was the waterfront, the sea and marine life. Commercial fishing became his 40+ year career with his own off shore fishing boat. After seeing Wyland's Newport mural, Kaspar visited the artist's gallery in San Diego at Seaport Village. There Kaspar met Wyland, over time became one of Wyland's favorite collectors and considers him a friend.
