SMITH, CPASouthwest SALT Region Leader and Tulsa Tax Managing PartnerEXPERIENCETom’s career began as an auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in 1990, where he spent more than six years performing out of state audits. He frequently conducted training classes and performed numerous computerized samples. He was also called upon to testify as an expert witness on several occasions. This foundation with the state gave him special insight as his career moved into public accounting. Tom spent a total of 15 years at several Big Four firms before joining a regional firm as a Partner in 2010. Tom is known for his expertise in tax controversy and has also recovered millions for his clients through sales tax refund studies (reverse audits). He has had vast experience managing taxability research projects and regularly worked due diligence projects both pre-and post-acquisition when in the Big 4. Tom is well known in Nashville, Tennessee, where he developed a significant experience in the healthcare industry. He also has extensive experience in the energy industry as well, servicing clients in both Oklahoma and Texas. Tom is a frequent speaker on the topic of state taxation for Lorman Seminars, LAT Seminars, the OSCPA, and Council of Petroleum Accountants Societies. Tom also speaks at many CPA firms nationally, as a subject matter expert for their year-end update events. Tom joined BDO as the partner in charge of the Southwest State and Local Tax practice in 2014. Although he calls Tulsa home, he leads a team of over 70 professionals in Tulsa, Dallas, Houston, and Fort Worth. He brings over 23 years of experience delivering tax services to public corporations and closely-held entities. Prior to joining BDO, Jerry was the managing tax partner for a BDO Alliance USA accounting firm. Jerry has a broad base of knowledge across several areas of taxation; however, he focuses in international taxation and accounting for income taxes. He began his professional accounting career with Arthur Andersen LLP in their international tax practice followed by several years with a Big Four firm while continuing to work with multinational enterprises. He was also previously the head of tax for Cricket Communications until acquired by AT&T in 2014. Jerry currently serves a chair for the School of Accounting Advisory Board for the University of Utah.
