WATERTOWN, MA — We've heard about the massive influx of rodents over the last few years, and to try to combat it, Watertown Health Officials are urging residents to switch to alternative Halloween decorations. Plastic pumpkins? No way. I'm big on Halloween myself and the idea of getting rid of the traditional squash on my doorstep seems unheard of, but it might be the best way to prevent pesky critters from entering your home as it gets colder. Even though rats and rodents have been part of our communities for centuries, scientists explain that due to shorter and warmer winters, rats have been more active. Rats are typically less active during the colder parts of the year and are less likely to breed. Leaving pumpkins out on your porch can be enticing to the creatures who are looking for a festive snack while they're out. Maybe leave the real pumpkins indoors this year and put plastic ones outside? The Health Department has many initiatives in place to curb rodent activity in the community. The Health Department works with other Town departments, residents, and business owners to promote better understandings of rat behavior and how to minimize their presence and impact on the community.
