NEW YORK CITY — A backdrop behind Gov. Kathy Hochul explained the impetus behind a $25 million state pledge toward nonprofit security: "Hate has no home here." Hochul on Wednesday announced the money will be in addition to $43 million that already went out to help 362 community organizations ward off hate crime attacks. "This money will fund 872 different projects across the state, but we're not done, my friends," she said to an audience at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City. "I'm here to announce we're making an additional $25 million available through the Division of Criminal Justice Services that will support another 800 projects across the state," she said. "It's starting now. We'll get that money out. We'll get it where it's needed." The count of hate crimes surged in New York City in recent years. This year, the NYPD counted 424 hate crimes compared to 209 in all of 2020, according to newly released crime statistics. Anti-Asian hate crimes showed a 368 percent year-over-year change, the largest growth among any group in the city. But anti-Semitic hate crime incidents remain the most prevalent, according to NYPD data. Officers documented 147 hate crimes this year against Jewish people. "This stops now," Hochul said. "I don't want a single New Yorker to ever, ever have the fear that's in the hearts of too many people from our Jewish community, our Asian community, our African-American community, or any other community that feels they've been under siege." The state's Division of Criminal Justice Services will seek proposals for the $25 million starting this fall, officials said. Applications will go up to $50,000 per facility and each eligible organization can submit up to three applications for a maximum of $150,000.
