NORTH HAVEN, CT — The 2021 municipal election is heating up in North Haven with plenty of races on the ballot. Voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 2 and cast their ballots for the Board of Selectmen, Board of Education, Town Clerk/Tax Collector and more. North Haven Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near. Sally Buemi, 64, is running for re-election to the Board of Selectmen in North Haven as a Democrat. Occupation: Attorney Experience: Current member of the North Haven Board of Selectmen serving in my fourth term. Elected to and served on the North Haven Board of Finance 1985-1989. Appointed to and served for two years on the North Haven Community Services Commission 1984-1985. Family in government: no The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it: To ensure the best town services at the lowest cost to the taxpayers. I intend to continue to work hard during the budget formulation process and to fight for fiscal responsibility and transparency. I will continue to attend all Board of Finance meetings and keep the citizens informed with my monthly "I was just thinking" newspaper column. Critical differences between me and my opponents: I have many years of experience in town government, and my skill set as an attorney has enabled me to have a direct impact on town policy. For example, I directly participated in the drafting of the Senior Tax Freeze Ordinance and the Tax Incentive Ordinance and Amendments. My experience as an attorney has also enabled me to effectively impact town real estate matters such as the purchase of open space and the negotiation of conservation easements. For 8 years on the Board of Selectmen, I have been a strong advocate for public participation at all town meetings, and I have promoted the civil discourse of the issues, and in an effort to provide alternative points of view. Accomplishments: I have kept the citizens informed through my newspaper column, especially during budget season. I also have worked hard to fulfill the many duties of a member of the Board of Selectmen. For example, I initiated and organized a special tribute to World War II veterans in 2015 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of that War; I initiated and helped organize the ceremony to mark the 15th anniversary of 9-11 back in 2016, I have worked hard to get qualified and diverse people to serve on our many appointed boards and commissions, and most importantly, for 8 years as the minority party representative on the Board of Selectmen, I have been an effective watchdog in this town government, calling out misleading or inaccurate information, and and challenging the process by which many town decisions are made. Other issues: I believe first and foremost in keeping the citizens accurately informed about the budget and how services can be better provided. We need to provide quality education in a fiscally responsible manner. North Haven has a high proportion of senior citizens and we need to improve services and programs to help those on a fixed income. What else would you like voters to know about you? I am a lifelong resident of North Haven, and I was educated K-12 in the town's school system, graduating from NHHS in 1974. I have a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration from UCONN and a law degree from Western New England. I love this town, and I've worked very hard to make it even better. When I decided to start my own law practice, I never considered any other location but my home town, and I've had my law firm in Montowese since 1985. I am a former softball coach for North Haven girls softball leagues, a former player and sponsor of adult softball teams for 40 years, a former volunteer with local boy scouts, and a former substitute teacher and history tutor for the North Haven Board of Education. My hobbies include cooking great Italian meals for family and friends, history, and astronomy and golf. Are you running for office in North Haven?
