NEW HAVEN, CT — A 42-year-old New Haven man plunged from a Route 114 overpass onto the Route 15 highway below and was struck by a car early Tuesday night, state police said. Responding to a "body in the roadway" report, state police found Carmelo Agosto, of Quinnipiac Avenue, in the right travel lane of Route 15 south, near exit 58 in Woodbridge. After falling "for unknown reasons" onto the roadway below, he was struck by a car driven by a 48-year-old Orange resident, according to the accident report from CSP Troop I. Police said Agosto was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. Patch contacted Woodbridge Police Department Chief Frank Cappiello and after receiving a copy of that department's report, learned that just before 7:30, police began receiving 911 calls about a 2014 Blue Nissan Versa seen on Racebrook Road near the Orange town line driving erratically and weaving across the roadway. While police were on their way to the area, they got an update that witnesses reported the car was "stopped on the overpass" and the driver "fell on the highway below." When the Woodbridge officer arrived, he found the car facing north in the southbound lane, running, and in gear but "stationary" parallel to the overpass and Agosto in the road below. The police report reads that by that time, state and Orange police as well as Orange firefighters were arriving. After speaking to three witnesses—two in one car and one in another and both traveling behind Agosto—they reported seeing the car swerve on the road and then stop on the overpass. Theywent to check on the driver and found the car "unoccupied" and Agosto on the highway below. None saw him go over the overpass wall, according to the report written by the responding Woodbridge police officer, Stephen J. Praleikas. Praleikas noted that he was unable to determine why Agosto was driving erratically or how he fell off of the over overpass, but noted that there were "smudges on the outside of the vehicles' driver side window and (it) appeared that he may have climbed out and over the adjacent wall." Inside the car, police found his wallet with $877 in cash inside an iPhone. Praleikas noted that ambulance personnel said Agosto was "still breathing but unresponsive" while on the way to the hospital. State police ask that anyone with information call Trooper McCue at Troop I at 203-393-4200.
