Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Thursday October 7th, 2021! First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy and cool. High: 72 Low: 54. Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: The tuba player had to go it alone (as did the rest of the band) at the Kennedy High School football game on Friday night, as parents and boosters of the band were not allowed in to watch the game, unlike families of the football players. They called "foul" and the school administration is looking into it. "Our No. 1 concern is to make sure our community, students, and staff are safe, particularly during COVID," explained Keyshun Marshall, Sacramento City Unified coordinator for risk management. "Our policy does outline spectators," she said. "However, at fault to us, it was not specified on our extracurricular activities ... we're looking to revise that." Hopefully, by the next game, the tuba players' biggest fans will get to watch them, too. (KCRA3) Residents of Carmichael got an ugly surprise when bags of white rice with swastikas on them were put on their doorsteps. "On their doorstep, they found a Ziploc bag. It had a small amount of like cooking white rice and a flyer inside from the Aryan Nation, that had a swastika on it," said Sgt. Rod Grassmann, with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Authorities are trying to find out if any fingerprints were left behind. Homeland Security is also investigating. There were at least 10 victims and the perpetrators were caught on a security video at one home. It is not clear if the homes were targeted or if they were chosen at random. "Certainly, our concern is that something like this gets escalated into something more," Grassmann said. (FOX40)The new southbound Interstate 5 bus/carpool lane between Sacramento and Elk Grove is open! On Tuesday, Caltrans announced that the new lane was now open well ahead of the projected completion date. The new carpool lane stretches from Pocket Road in Sacramento to Elk Grove Boulevard in Elk Grove. The carpool lane is part of the FixSac5 project and Caltrans officials say they are well ahead of the original winter 2022 estimated completion date for the overall project. (CBS Sacramento) It's a "push me pull you" situation for a homeless encampment on the west side of Business 80 in Sacramento. The camp was designated a safety hazard, so Caltrans went in to clean it up, but all of the shelters in the city are full, so the homeless had to find arrangements on their own. Some of them simply set up camp on the other side of the freeway. City councilmember Katie Valenzuela expressed frustration with Caltrans for clearing the area at this time when the city had no place to house the camp residents. Patrick Bishop with Caltrans said, "We make those kinds of arrangements whenever we can and, right now, I think the ball's in the city's court in terms of filing an application for a permit for lease under one of our properties." (KCRA3) CHP officers are continuing to search for the hit-and-run driver who killed a father and son along the freeway in North Highlands on Monday. The victims had run out of gas and were on the side of the freeway when a GMC pickup veered off the freeway and hit the two. Both were killed at the scene. Late Monday night, two chaplains met Pixie Charlesworth at her Sacramento home, with the devastating news that her husband, Donald Charlesworth Jr. 63, and her son Donald Charlesworth III, 26, are both gone. "My only consolation is they were together," she said. (CBS Sacramento) From our sponsor: Today's Sacramento Daily is brought to you by Ring, a Patch Brand Partner.
