LEMONT, IL — Lemont High School's football program has already clinched its 16th playoff berth in 17 seasons, and while head coach Bret Kooi's team has state championship aspirations, there's a new state title on the line this season, the school said in a news release. The Illinois High School Association has set the field for its inaugural Pork & Pigskins Championship to crown the best concession pork chop sandwich among Illinois high schools. Lemont High School's Blue & Gold Backers, a parent-driven volunteer organization that supports the athletic department through fundraising activities, is asking for the community's votes to help it advance in the competition. The Pork & Pigskins Championship, which is sponsored by the IHSA and the Illinois Pork Producers Association, will include 79 schools divided into four regions, the school said. Lemont is included in the Yorkshire Region, as are South Suburban Conference-Blue Division foes Thornton Fractional North and Thornton Fractional South. You can vote for your favorite pork chop sandwich online. The opening round of voting will close at 8 a.m. on Friday. Fans can vote as many times as they would like before votes close. The school said the top four vote-getters in each region will advance to the "Savory 16", which will feature in-person judging between Oct. 9-22. Then, the "Flavorful Four" will be revealed on the IHSA Playoff Pairing Preview Show (played at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 on the NFHS Network). Finally, the Pork & Pigskins State Champion will be revealed at halftime of the IHSA Class 6A Football State Championship at Northern Illinois University on Nov. 27 after another round of online voting. The winning school will receive a prize package from the Illinois Pork Producers Association that includes a $500 reimbursement on their pork purchase for next season, a state championship banner and a golden spatula for the winner, according to the school.
