Michael Garbo To Be Remembered With Public Funeral

TUCSON, AZ — The Tucson community will gather Friday to mourn the death of Michael Garbo. A public funeral service is planned at Cavalry Chapel in Tucson to honor and remember Garbo, a supervisory special agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency who was shot and killed on an Amtrak train in Tucson Monday. Garbo was part of a team conducting a routine check for drugs and guns on the train when he was shot and killed by a passenger who was suspected of illegal drug possession. The passenger was shot and killed on the train when officers returned fire, police said. Another DEA agent and a Tucson Police officer were also shot on the train and were hospitalized for their injuries. "Friday's service will honor Supervisory Special Agent Garbo's courage and sacrifice and celebrate his life as a loving husband, father, brother, and exemplary federal narcotics agent," according to a news release from the Phoenix division of the DEA. Garbo joined the agency in 2005. He served the DEA for more than 16 years as a special agent and then as a group supervisor, who combatted drug trafficking from Mexico to Afghanistan. Ceremonies to honor Garbo will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday with a law enforcement procession starting at Bring's Broadway Chapel at 6910 E. Broadway Boulevard. The procession will head east to South Harrison Road, north to Speedway Boulevard and then west to end at Calvary Chapel, 8711 E. Speedway Boulevard. The doors at Calvary are set to open to the public at 9:30 a.m. with final seating at 9:50 a.m. The funeral service is set to begin at 10 a.m. Cameras and other recording devices will not be permitted inside the chapel during the service, at the request of the family. The service will be livestreamed.
