Rise and shine, Atlanta! Let's get this Thursday started off right. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening today in Atlanta. First, today's weather: Humid with rain and a t-storm. High: 76 Low: 66. Here are the top stories today in Atlanta: A video has gone viral showing a Georgia State Patrol trooper pulling a man over for not wearing a seatbelt and then kicking him, calling into question the use of force. In the video, posted Sunday by Atlanta Uncensored News , the trooper is seen running after the man near Edgewood Avenue before his taser fires and the man falls. The trooper then kicks the man as he's on the ground. According to GSP, the 27-year-old drove off, then got out of the car and ran, and that's where the video begins. GPS also said the trooper saw a gun. The man, who GPS said is on probation for assault and has an active warrant for simple battery, was charged with fleeing, obstruction, possession of a firearm with altered serial number, and six other crimes. (11 Alive) UPDATE: A fatal shooting Monday that forced a nearby school, Howard Middle School, to alter its release plan was determined by Atlanta police to be an act of self defense. According to police, officers were called to a Howell Street home where they found two men with gunshot wounds. One of the men, who police determined climbed in a window and attacked the homeowner, was shot by the homeowner and died at the scene. The homeowner was also shot but was taken to the hospital and listed as stable. No charges are expected in the case, authorities said. (WSB Atlanta) A forum Tuesday gave lesser-known Atlanta mayoral candidates an opportunity to shine. Thirteen of the 14 candidates on the Nov. 2 ballot weighed in on a variety of issues, including their unanimous opposition to the controversial Buckhead cityhood movement. While the five candidates with the highest polling numbers – Antonio Brown, Andre Dickens, Sharon Gay, Felicia Moore and Kasim Reed – have appeared in many forums, it offered rare exposure for the others, including Kirsten Dunn, Nolan English, Mark Hammad, Kenny Hill, Rebecca King, Roosevelt Searles III, Richard Wright and Glenn Wrightson. The only candidate on the November ballot who did not appear is Walter Reeves, and the two certified write-in contenders – Henry Anderson and Brandon Adkins – were not invited by forum organizers. (SaportaReport) Legislation was passed Monday by the Atlanta City Council that will allow Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to create two executive offices for social justice and crime reduction. The offices are the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Violence Reduction. Bottoms, who is not seeking reelection, called the violence reduction office "another step in the right direction towards keeping our communities safe." She also thanked the council for unanimously supporting a permanent office for equity, diversity and inclusion, "the cornerstone of our administration," she said.
