Description
I've noticed a new scam going around Craigslist recently. I flag them but they don't instantly get taken down since folks don't seem to know that they're scams. I'm warning everyone who reads this to keep an eye out. Below I reveal the scam:
Labeled as "looking for [breed]", often yorkie or shihtzu, look for typos and empty spaces where letters should be. Nowadays CL scammers are almost always bots scripted to make their own posts or they steal them from others. They use multiple characters like ####, ****, &&&& and random capital letters or numbers that don't belong like "Y0rkIe", some use a combination.
If you contact them there are red flags to watch for. Most scammers prefer text to send a Google code to "make sure you're real." This code gets sent to you when you click 'forgot password'. If you share it the scammer can take over your Google account, steal your personal info to sell online and any money from attached cards or even accounts from sites you've signed into.
If you email a scammer they may simply ask for your personal info - often a phone number or full name - to sell online. They may say you won the lottery or need help shipping a large sum of money or gold. On the phone they pose as technicians for big-name companies, agents of the Geek Squad or IRS that you haven't paid taxes, police officers who found drugs in a car or house under your name or for a refund to a service you never signed up for. This "looking for" scam is meant to steal your personal info.
BEWARE OF SCAMS! Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
