Learn to write a compelling artist statement that tells your audience everything you want them to know about your art! Your artist statement is one of the most important pieces of written material needed to convey your vision and concepts to your audience and help you to put your best foot forward when applying to galleries and shops. It's time to get your s*!# together and update that artist statement you wrote years ago in college or that you wrote in a panic before a midnight grant deadline. It’s hard to sit down at the blank page and write something profound, alone and under pressure. In this class, Lisa will give you all of the tools you need to start thinking about your work and what you're trying to express to your audience - it will be fun! On Friday night, you will go through some writing exercises to create a first draft. Then on Saturday, you will drill down on edits with other classmates. You will walk away with a strong artist statement that you can be proud of. At the end of this workshop:You'll have an artist statement written in clear, concise, compelling proseYou’ll be well prepared to talk about your art with friends, colleagues, gallery owners, journalists, and have your 'elevator pitch'You'll be a better writer and will claim writing as a resource in your creative toolkitYou’ll be ready to apply for grants/jobs/fellowships/residencies/exhibitions with confidenceDetails: Class meets Friday, October 15th 6-8pm and Saturday, October 16th 9-11am Come prepared with images of your work, your current artist statement (if you have one), and a laptop or iPad About Lisa Michelle Williamson: Lisa M. Williamson is a an interdisciplinary writer and artist. Born in Michigan, raised in Ohio, and transplanted in Memphis, TN, Williamson received her MFA from the Memphis College of Art and is currently a PhD candidate at The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts, Portland, ME. As a visiting instructor at the University of Memphis Williamson teaches Foundations in art. She enjoys connecting to her students and helping them see emerging content and themes in their work, specifically as they develop their personal concentrations.
