We’ll share lessons learned as we strategically infused math games into our K-6 classrooms throughout the last several years. In this workshop we will:
Explore the motivation behind Liggett's shift to using math games to promote fact fluency and flexible thinking and our decision to leave rote memorization behind.Describe the process of the making the curricular shift from both the departmental level and as well as in the individual classrooms at the K-8 level.Provide resources that we used to engage parents during our Math Game Night which left families engaged, excited and energized.Learner Outcomes:
Participants will learn how we engaged members of our math department and classroom teachers to create buy-in for this shift.Participants will learn how we built our repertoire of homemade and commercial games and how/when we work these games into our math classesParticipants will get to play some of our favorite games and they will leave with a list of vetted games, directions on how to play them, along with resources to share with students and parents to promote playing math games at home.
