NEW YORK CITY — A motorist who racked up $58,000 in unpaid tolls zipping in and out of New York City lost their ride, MTA officials said. MTA Bridge and Tunnel officers Oct. 1 busted the motorist at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, authorities said. The motorist — one of MTA's top toll violators — had received 400 notifications over outstanding tolls and fees, officials said. Officers impounded the motorist's vehicle and requested charges of driving with a suspended registration. "Our law enforcement personnel are trained to look for motorists who have repeatedly failed to pay their tolls, and are equipped with specialized license plate readers that can instantly identify those motorists," said Daniel F. DeCrescenzo Jr., president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, in a statement. "Drivers who have failed to pay their toll bills are subject to being pulled over and having their car impounded." MTA officials used the bust as way to highlight toll enforcement. The agency's officers wrote more than 31,000 summonses for obstructed or covered license plates since open-road tolling began in 2017, officials said. They also impounded more than 5,000 vehicles with owners who repeatedly failed to pay tolls. On-time payments can keep motorists from facing larger fees, or losing their vehicles. Toll rates are discounted by up to 40 percent by using E-ZPass, which can be set up here.
