Here are the top stories today in Spokane: Spokane Public Schools has a lot of numbers to crunch as it considers the effect of new boundaries approved this summer. By the district's count, 677 current students could face attending new schools when the boundary changes take effect – next fall on the North Side and the following year on the South Hill. Of those, 250 are elementary age and will attend new schools at all three levels, elementary, middle and high school.(The Spokesman Review)In the last two weeks, three more city staffers inside the Community Housing and Human Services Department have announced they're leaving. The understaffed department could cause the region to lose out on millions of dollars to address homelessness, worries Ben Stuckart, chair of the county's regional Continuum of Care board. "In short, if Spokane loses this funding, we will never get it back and the homeless response system will cease to exist," he wrote. (Pacific Northwest Inlander) Months after several new police reform laws took effect in Washington, the Spokane Police Department asked for approval to buy more 'less lethal' tools. The Spokane City Council voted 6-1 at a meeting on Monday to approve funding for 100 PepperBall launchers and 76 additional ballistic shields.
