Yale New Haven Buys Meriden Mall Anchor Space

MERIDEN, CT — The former Macy's at the Meriden Mall has been purchased by Yale New Haven Health System, according to The New Haven Register. Yale New Haven is expected to use the 179,285-square-foot, two-story former anchor spot as "a retail health facility." Terms of the deal were not released. Macy's at the mall closed last year. The mall was sold by Westfield to Namdar Realty Group in June. One analyst told The New Haven Register that the move will be beneficial for the mall as a whole, saying that "It can really save a retail center that is down on its luck." Bringing in health care consumers could boost customer counts and foot traffic at the struggling mall. In recent years the mall has lost anchors Sears and JCPenney as well as smaller stores like Charlotte Russe, LOFT, and Game Stop. The former Macy's served the community for 49 years. The retailer has other nearby locations at Brass Mill Center in Waterbury, The Connecticut Post Mall in Milford, and The Westfarms Mall in Farmington.
