LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Weekly COVID -19 testing events are returning to Loudoun County. The free COVID-19 tests will be available on Tuesdays, rotating through sites in Leesburg, Sterling, and Purcellville. The drive-thru events will operate from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In September, the Loudoun County Health Department resumed the free testing events on a bimonthly basis after pausing the events over the summer. The resumption of the program was inspired by the spike in COVID-19 cases in the area due to the delta variant. "I encourage anyone who thinks they may have been exposed to COVID-19 to get evaluated and tested promptly, either privately or through one of the county's testing events," said Loudoun County Health Director Dr. David Goodfriend. "You should get tested if you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and a new loss of taste or smell or if you have been potentially exposed to someone with COVID-19, regardless of their vaccination status." Though COVID-19 cases are beginning to decline, Loudoun County's numbers are still in a "slow growth," according to the Virginia Department of Health. In a report released on Friday, researchers from the VDH and the University of Virginia were apprehensive about another surge. "The Delta wave has caused only about 40 percent of the cases experienced during last winter's surge — at least so far," the researchers said. "Right now, the Delta wave appears to have peaked. However, the sharpest growth last year occurred over the holidays, beginning around Thanksgiving." Vaccinations and testing are two of the most important strategies in preventing another surge in COVID-19 cases, public health officials said.
