Press release from the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce - News: 2021-10-05 The House Reconciliation Bill recently passed by the House Ways & Means Committee includes a $4500 consumer tax credit exclusively for union-built electric vehicles. The Chamber strongly opposes this tax credit. This tax provision will negatively impact dealerships in our community, namely Toyota and Lexus dealerships in San Antonio and Bexar County. Local dealerships that employ hundreds of San Antonians have invested millions of dollars in order to offer to the public a product line that moves the U.S. toward the goal of meeting the 2030 challenge of making half of the vehicles they sell electric. While the EV tax proposal makes strides toward the goal of carbon reduction, it includes provisions that discriminate against half the autoworkers in America who have chosen to work in a nonunion environment.  The proposal suggests that the vehicles made by non-union employees in America are somehow less valuable than those made by unionized workers. This is unfair and wrong. The Chamber's mission is to build and sustain a vibrant business community by engaging business owners, policymakers, and influencers to address issues and opportunities important to our members and the region. This provision does nothing to better the environment, nor support the business community. The Chamber wrote to the Bexar County Congressional Delegation to express opposition to the $4,500 consumer tax credit as it will negatively impact dealerships in our community. In response to our letter, Congressman Cuellar wrote a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressing opposition to the same EV tax credit.
