SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Police Department is commemorating an annual event by promoting pedestrian safety. National Walk to School Day is held on Oct. 6. The San Rafael Police Department will have additional patrols around schools during this event, which highlights the benefits of exercise and practicing pedestrian and road safety. "Walking to school is a great way to not only stay active, but also practice safe walking behaviors," San Rafael police traffic Sgt. Justin Graham said in a statement. "With many students returning to in-person instruction this year, 'Walk to School Day' is a valuable learning tool that benefits students at the start of the school year." Drivers should be alert for more people walking to school in the morning of Oct. 6th and be prepared to stop for children crossing the street. Drivers should always watch their speed and slowdown in school zones. Police offer the following tips for children and parents to incorporate into their walks: Be predictable Use crosswalksWalk on sidewalks, when availableAlways look left-right-right before crossing the street Make sure the driver sees youContinue to scan for traffic as you cross the streetDo not walk or run into the path of a vehicleWatch for cars entering/backing out of driveways or leaving parking spaces Schools are encouraged to register at walkbiketoschool.org as a way of tracking participation and showing support for active, healthy, and safe transportation.
