Description
WEST WARWICK, RI — Three people were killed in a fiery overnight crash on Interstate 95 South, Rhode Island State Police said.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m., just south of Exit 8. All three people were in the same car, which veered off the road into the grass median. It then hit a tree and burst into flames, police said.
West Warwick firefighters put out the fire, and the driver and two passengers were pulled from the wreckage. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. Because of the extent of their injuries, none could be identified and were taken to the Rhode Island Medical Examiner's Office for identification using dental records. Their identities are expected to be released by the end of the week, state police said.
The driver was speeding at the time of the crash, police said, in the second lane of the highway. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to reach out to Rhode Island State Police at 401-444-1064.
