JOLIET, IL — A 45-year-old Joliet man was arrested Tuesday morning in connection with a Sept.7 baseball bat attack at the Michalene Liquors store, 692 Theodore St. Last month's beating left another man hospitalized with severe injuries to his leg. On Sept. 30, Joliet police got a bench warrant to arrest Manuel Burgos on two counts of aggravated battery. Burgos was booked into the Will County Jail around 6:25 a.m. on Oct. 5, jail logs show. According to Joliet police, officers arrived at the parking lot for Michalene's Liquors around 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 7 after learning of a fight. Police found the victim on the ground, conscious, but bleeding. "The investigation determined that while the victim was in the parking lot, Burgos arrived to the parking lot driving a vehicle that was playing loud music," Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English stated. "The victim asked Burgos to turn down the volume to which Burgos refused." Police said the victim went inside the liquor store, at which time both men exchanged words again that "appeared to be leading to a fight." Burgos retrieved a baseball bat from his vehicle and struck the victim in the leg, causing him to fall to the ground, police reports show. Burgos sped away from Michalene Liquors before Joliet officers and ambulance crews got to the scene, English noted. A Joliet Fire Department ambulance rushed the beating victim to St. Joe's hospital. After the baseball bat attack on Theodore Street, Joliet police officers contacted Burgos at his residence in the 1400 block of Highland Avenue. "Burgos admitted to striking the victim with the bat but refused to exit his residence to speak further with officers on the scene," Joliet police reports show. Will County Jail records indicate that a judge has set bail at $500,000 for Burgos. Joliet police investigated a baseball bat attack at the Michalene's Liquors store on Sept. 7.
