GLEN ELLYN, IL — Visitors are invited to watch an award-winning artist create an original piece in downtown Glen Ellyn Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. Nate Baranowski, whose two- and three-dimensional chalk art creations, murals and paintings have been displayed throughout the world, will craft a colorful masterpiece in front of Citibank, 444 Main St., as part of the start of College of DuPage's two-year public art initiative with DuPage County. Ahead of the event, residents and local businesses are encouraged to decorate their sidewalks with their own chalk creations. Packages of chalk, three of which will contain a gift certificate for free ice cream, are available while supplies last and can be picked up from: Glen Ellyn Public Library, 400 Duane St.McAninch Arts Center Box Office, 425 Fawell Blvd.Civic Center, Finance Department, 535 Duane St. Click the link to submit a picture of your chalk art to the event's Dropbox. "The committee is excited and invested in engaging the greater community, organizations, schools and families to show off their creativity and build community through something fun and creative," Diana Martinez, who chairs College of DuPage's Public Arts Project, said in a news release. Martinez added, "The fall is a beautiful time in Glen Ellyn, and we think the family fall theme is a perfect tie into the Halloween festivities coming and a great way for Glen Ellyn to celebrate the start of Arts DuPage month." Nate Baranowski fell in love with street painting while pursuing a bachelor's degree in fine arts at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In addition to chalk art, he creates painted murals, digital paintings and concept art, according to his website. In September, two original murals by Tony Fitzpatrick were unveiled at 427 Main St. The College of DuPage (COD) alum's murals heralded the start of the college's public arts initiative and partnership with DuPage County. COD also plans to help the village create at least two more public art installations and establish a public arts committee that will help promote community engagement with the arts.
