Press release from the City of Elgin: October 4, 2021 October 3, 2021 UPCOMING TRAFFIC ALERTS The City of Elgin, Union Pacific Railroad and Metra all have upcoming construction projects that will present major impacts to high traffic routes in or nearby Elgin. Please read carefully, and plan ahead to find alternative routes and avoid delays in the coming weeks. City of Elgin's temporary closure of southbound Longcommon Parkway from Weld to Cranston Southbound Longcommon Parkway will be closed Tuesday, October 5 and lasting through Friday, October 8, weather dependent. Tuesday and Wednesday, milling will take place on Longcommon Pkwy from US-20 to the Cranston Avenue roundabout. Thursday and possibly Friday, paving will follow on the milled area. All construction work will take place from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with flaggers used for directing traffic.  Union Pacific's full closure of Big Timber Road (both directions) just beyond Elgin city limits at road crossing Weather permitting, on Thursday, October 7, the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) will be closing Big Timber Road at the railroad crossing about 900 feet west of Tyrrell Road in the Village of Gilberts. This full road closure will allow for the railway crossing to be safely reconstructed, improving the riding surface for Big Timber Road motorists.  The road is scheduled to be closed at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 7 and is expected to reopen by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8, weather dependent. The posted detour route will use Big Timber Road, Tyrrell Road and IL Route 72 to divert traffic around the construction area (see map below). Motorists should be prepared to reduce their speed, exercise caution and to obey all traffic control devices.    Metra's full closure of National Street at track crossings Monday, October 11, 7:00 a.m. through Friday, October 15 at 5:00 p.m., Metra will make repairs to the track crossing on National Street.  Posted detour (see map below) Westbound traffic: North on State, west on Chicago, south on Center/Villa Eastbound traffic: North on Villa/Center, west on Highland, south on State  Find information on 2021 City of Elgin construction projects at cityofelgin.org/construction or by contacting 311 (847-931-6001 if outside Elgin).
