Join us for a night of stories and myths about witches throughout history followed by an outdoor movie showing of Hocus Pocus! Are you fascinated by the history of witches? Is your favorite Halloween movie Hocus Pocus? Then we have the PERFECT night for you! Get cozy in the backyard of Likewise Coffee with your favorite blanket and friends while we enjoy a night of learning, laughing, and lounging. Beginning with a witchy history talk + Q&A session from Dr. Maria Stehle, a professor at the University of Tennessee. We will learn about the myth, reality, and representation of witches throughout history. Following Dr. Stehle's talk, it's time for everyone's favorite three witches - The Sanderson Sisters! There will be food trucks on site (being announced soon) as well as cider and cookies while you enjoy the movie! Registered attendees will need to pay for anything purchased from the food trucks, but the event along with cider and cookies are FREE. Note: Space is limited in Likewise Coffee's backyard. Come early to get LIMITED EDITION Let Her Speak swag. About Dr. StehleMaria Stehle received her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2005. She taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor of German and Gender and Women's Studies at Connecticut College before she joined the faculty at UT in the fall of 2007. Her publications focus on German and European Cultural Studies, Gender and Media Studies, and Cultural Histories of Germany since 1945. Aside from scholarly articles, book chapters, and edited volumes, she has published three monographs, "Ghetto Voices in Contemporary Germany: Textscapes, Filmscapes, and Soundscapes" (Camden House in 2012), "Awkward Politics: The Technologies of Popfeminist Activism" (McGill/Queens UP, 2016, with Carrie Smith-Prei) and “Precarious Intimacies: The Politics of Touch in Contemporary European Cinema” (Northwestern University Press, 2020, with Beverly Weber). Dr. Stehle is currently working on a new project that draws on ecocriticism, feminism, and critical race theory to analyze visual and literary depictions of plants and places. She is also interested in interdisciplinary and creative strategies for teaching for social justice, practices of critical pedagogy, and student centered learning. Dr. Stehle is also the co-editor of the open access web publication “Digital Feminist Collective” and book review editor for the journal German Studies Review. She serves as Graduate Coordinator for German, Co-Chair for the Interdisciplinary Program in Cinema Studies, and Steering Committee Member for the Interdisciplinary Program in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies.
