LEESBURG, VA — Employees of the Leesburg Police Department voiced concerns about a proposed vaccine mandate at a recent meeting of the Leesburg Town Council. The employees noted that many police officers may quit if the mandate is implemented. The proposed vaccine mandate would apply to all town employees and some contractors, not just members of the police department. Those affected by the policy would receive a 90-day notice to become fully vaccinated against COVID-19. At last week's town council meeting, multiple Leesburg Police Department employees noted their skepticism about the proposed vaccine mandate. "I'm not sure you fully understand how your decision could impact our police department," Josh Carter told the town council. "This decision could decimate LPD." Carter, who identified himself as a member of the Leesburg Police Department, said the town could see a significant loss of police officers if the mandate is passed. "If you decide to move forward with mandating this vaccine, the loss of officers is on you," Carter said. "I'm going to come back and ask what your plan is to keep my family and my neighbors safe with little to no officers patrolling our streets or our schools." Carter did not say why he believes officers would leave the department if a vaccine mandate is passed. "You will lose a significant amount of officers," said William Butterfield, who said he was employed by the police department. "If this vaccine does become mandated, I will be seeking other employment." Butterfield did not say whether he had any specific concerns with the COVID-19 vaccines. However, he noted that the town's police officers are "all big boys and grown adults" who can make their own decisions. The COVID-19 vaccines are currently available for free. The vaccines are also safe and effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Though some vaccinated people can still test positive for COVID-19, they are significantly less likely to die or require hospitalization as a result of the disease. More information about vaccinations in Loudoun County, including where to receive a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, is available on the county's website.
