SANTA MONICA, CA — Lifeguards cleared the water and all the Los Angeles County beaches after lightning struck at the beach Monday afternoon. Beaches along the coast, from San Pedro to Malibu, are closed, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division. Avalon and Catalina Island are closed. "We are experiencing numerous lightning strikes across the greater Los Angeles area," the Los Angeles County Fire Department said via Twitter. "For your safety, we advise residents to seek shelter and remain inside until this lightning activity subsides." Thunder and lightning struck about 4:30 p.m. along the coast. Rain was falling shortly after. Strong showers were reported in Long Beach and north of Two Harbors. "Expect lightning, gusty winds, and possibly some small hail with this storm," the NWS reports. People were urged to leave the beach area. "Lifeguards will clear the water of all persons and advise patrons on the beach to seek shelter immediately," officials said. Mariners were warned to check weather conditions before heading out. "If you happen to get caught in a thunderstorm return to harbor immediately and seek shelter," officials said. The National Weather Service expects tonight to be mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in Los Angeles County. Lows are in the upper 50s and 60s. West winds are expected to reach about 15 mph in the evening. Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy in the morning then sunny. Highs are expected to reach the upper 60s at the beaches to the upper 70s inland. Southwest winds will reach about 15 mph in the afternoon.
