He was convicted of killing Jay Rickbell in July 1991 and Todd Rudiger and Donna Ferguson the following year. He was convicted of raping a woman in 1995.
While in prison, Shaw said that he killed between 10 and 12 other people. He offered to give prosecutors details on the other murders in return for a promise that he wouldn't have face the death penalty.
Prosecutors said no deal.
Shaw did face the death penalty at his trial in 2006 but the jury couldn't come to a unanimous decision, which unlike what was needed for criminal convictions, was required at the time.
The department of corrections has not released information how Shaw died.
