ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst and a local nursing home have struck an agreement, with the city revoking the home's permit for an expansion and the home promising not to sue the city over the decision. Neighbors long opposed the project. In late April, a City Council committee recommended revoking the 2018 permit for Elmhurst Extended Care Center, 200 E. Lake St. A week later, the full City Council voted to send the issue back to the city's Zoning and Planning Commission. After that, attorneys for the city and nursing home hammered out an agreement. On Monday, the council plans to vote on the proposed deal. According to its provisions, nothing stops the nursing home from requesting a permit to expand later. In April, the nursing home revealed it was abandoning the project for now because of the economic effects of the pandemic. But it sought a two-year extension for when its situation improves. Neighbors on Fremont Avenue opposed the project because the nursing home would extend next to their homes.
