2014 Guggenheim recipient, and award-winning flute player Jamie Baum and her septet will conduct an educational workshop at Hoffman Music Limited-Capacity in-person tickets available for this workshop. Chairs will be spaced, socially distanced with a minimum of 3 feet between parties. Masks required. M. Bhatt and Karaikudi Mani. Awards and honors include several grants and residencies, a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship and eleven nominations by the Jazz Journalists Association for 'Flutist of the Year.” She’s been in DownBeat Critics Polls annually since 1998, making the short lists most other relevant national and International publications and received critical praise for six CDs as a leader, including four with her Septet+. Chosen through a highly competitive auditioning process to tour for the US State Department as a Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador (’99-’03), Jamie has since been frequently sponsored by the State Department while on her own tours in Europe and South Asia. Recently, Baum was included in the “JazzTimes 10: Essential Jazz Flute Albums” (2019), “3 Questions for Today’s Jazz Musicians” by Lilian Dericq, Cricket Publishers (Paris), the “Woodshed” in DownBeat (2019), and was the flutist on “The Essence of the Blues -- Flute: 10 Great Etudes for Playing and Improvising, Book & CD”, (Jim Snidero “play-along” series, 2019). Though focusing primarily on jazz, Ms. Baum has been involved in projects and tours performing classical, new music, global and South Asian influenced, jazz-funk/rock, Brazilian and Latin music. In addition to leading her Septet+ for the past 20 years, she leads Short Stories, co-leads Yard Byard: The Jaki Byard Project, The Richie Beirach/Jamie Baum Duo and NYC Jazz Flutes, and is involved in several project as a side-woman as heard on over 50 recordings. Baum is on the faculty of the jazz department at the Manhattan School of Music and is a clinician for Altus Flutes/KHS America. Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet) has been described by the New York Times as “an incisive and often surprising trumpeter, (who) brings a bladelike attack to complex materials.” Born in Berkeley, California, he began playing the trumpet at the age of ten in the Oakland public school system. A love for music brought him to New York where he attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and received a B.F.A. in performance. Finlayson is widely admired for his ability to tackle cutting-edge musical concepts with aplomb. As a leader his critically acclaimed group Sicilian Defense has played festivals in the U.S. and Europe. As a sideman Finlayson has performed and recorded in groups led by Steve Coleman, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer, Steve Lehman and Mary Halvorson. Saxophonist, multi-woodwind player, and composer Aaron Irwin is from Decatur, IL. Known as a lyrical alto saxophonist and a compelling original composer (The New Yorker), Irwin is a sought-after commodity in both the jazz and commercial worlds. Having spent twenty years in NYC, he has released several recordings of original music with various instrumentations that feature some of the finest musicians in the world. His latest recording Music for Sextet was released on Innova Recordings (January, ’21). In addition to his own groups, Irwin has performed with many leading NYC jazz voices including the Grammy-nominated Darcy James French hornist Chris Komer is equally at home in the concert hall (New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera), the recording studio (Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Sting) and the jazz club (Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Michael Brecker Quindectet, Jamie Baum Septet+, Chuck Mangione). He is currently the Principal Horn of the New Jersey Symphony and Professor of Horn at Princeton University. Chris recently released his first solo piano recording of original and improvised music entitled “Travlin' Music” and has founded a unique artist's retreat in the rocky mountains of Montana called the “Artist's Refuge at Thunderhead”. Brad Shepik (guitarist/composer) has recorded 9 albums as a leader and has performed throughout Europe, North and South America and the Middle East with many leading lights of Jazz and World Music. As a leader and a sideman, Brad appears on more than 60 recordings and has performed and recorded with Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio, Bob Brookmeyer, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Simon Shaheen, Yuri Yunakov's Bulgarian Wedding Band, Joey Baron, Pachora, Paradox Trio, Jamie Baum Septet +, Combo Nuvo, Kiran Ahluwalia, George Schuller, Jay Clayton, Ben Holmes and Arthur Kell among others. His latest recording is Believers (Orenda 2020) with world percussionist John Hadfield and bassist Sam Minaie. He currently teaches at New York University. Over the course of his career, John Escreet has earned a reputation as one of the most active and diverse pianist/composers working in jazz and improvised music. In addition to being a leader of prolific output, John is a sought-after sideman. He ’s toured extensively with Antonio Sanchez’s Migration, and the working bands of David Binney, Amir ElSaffar, Tyshawn Sorey, and Jamie Baum, etc. In 2009, John was a recipient of the prestigious Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant, in 2014 John was awarded the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation USArtists International grant to tour with his Quartet, and in 2015 was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), his Alma Mater - awarded to past students who have distinguished themselves in the music profession and made a significant contribution to it in their field. NYC bassist Ricardo Rodriguez studied classical bass and composition at the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico and can be found playing jazz, contemporary music, Afro-Caribbean or folkloric Latin music. In addition to his work with Michel Camilo’s trio, the David Sanchez Group, Pete Rodriguez Quintet, SNL Band, Vincent Herring, Joe Locke and Force of Four, Ignacio Berroa Quartet, Claudia Acuna, Magos Herrera, The Wayne Escoffery Quintet, The Rodriguez's Brothers, the Miguel Zenon Quartet, The Kenny Werner/David Sanchez Quartet and his own quintet, Ricky has also performed with Branford Marsalis, and Christian Scott, the Donny McCaslin trio, and The 90 Miles Project with Stefon Harris among others. NYC drummer Jeff Hirshfield has toured extensively worldwide in addition to conducting workshops and masterclasses focusing on group interaction and the importance of listening. He’s played on over 350 recordings and has performed and recorded with Paul Bley, Jim Hall, Kenny Wheeler, Dr. John, Toots Thielemans, Charlie Mariano, Joe Lovano, Red Rodney-Ira Sullivan, John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Randy Brecker, Tal Farlow, Frank Kimbrough, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Orchestra, John Zorn, Mose Allison, Joe Henderson, Bennie Wallace, Bob Brookmeyer, Eliane Elias, Mike Mainieri, Tom Harrell, Fred Hersch, Dave Liebman, Bill Frisell, Gary Peacock, Tim Berne, George Garzone, Woody Herman Orchestra, Mike Stern, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Marc Copland, Jamie Baum, David Binney, Michael Formanek, etc.
