Description

Hear the gongs, drums, and metallophones of Gamelan Genta Kasturi in an outdoors family-friendly concert of music and dance at MUSIC LOT Gamelan Genta Kasturi will perform on the gongs, drums, and metallophones of their orchestra, a community fixture in Kansas City since 2003. The concert will include an original composition by the group’s new director, Sam Hughes, as well as Balinese modern and traditional music. Dancers Marti and Saraswati Wilson will join them for Cendrawasih, a vigorous and playful dance inspired by the mating rituals of the bird of paradise, danced in elaborate headdresses, flowing scarves and skirts evocative of the bird’s natural beauty. This free family-friendly outdoor event is part of Kindness Inc’s MUSIC LOT series and will be held in their side lot at 5529 Troost Avenue on Saturday October 9th from 1 to 3PM. Enjoy plenty of on-street parking, and the nearby ice-cream parlor, restaurants and small shops as part of your visit. MUSIC LOT is presented by Kindness Inc., a 501 C-3 non-profit arts organization, founded in 1992 in NYC & now registered in Missouri too. Kindness supports the creation & presentation of original work in all genres. Gamelan Genta Kasturi, a community Balinese Semarandana Gamelan ensemble, has existed since its creation in the spring of 2003 by Balinese master musician I Ketút Gedé Asnawa and family in partnership with the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Since Mr. Asnawa's departure for a position at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign - Center for World Music in the spring of 2006, the group has continued to retain repertoire taught to us by him, perform regularly and create/perform new work within the medium in collaboration with other musicians and choreographers. The group continues in this vein; keeping repertoire taught to us up to speed, learning new traditional repertoire and creating our own original work in collaboration with other musicians, dancers and visual artists. We also retain the relationship with the Asnawa family, having performed together in Chicago as part of the 9th & 11th Annual Ramayana Festivals in 2009 and 2011 and specially produced Spring Concerts in Kansas City in 2009 & from 2014 to the present.
