Here are the top stories in Roanoke today: Roanoke is tackling its language barrier with a new interpreter program for city services. An estimated 5,000 city residents do not speak English well enough to work, attend school, interact with the government, and other daily necessities of life. Those residents can now use the services of Roanoke-based Volatia Language Network, which can bring interpreters of 286 languages to the phone in under a minute. Officials said the program will facilitate conversation between city offices and employees and members of the public with limited English ability. (The Daily Progress) Roanoke Police have released the name of the Roanoke resident shot and killed in a Moorman Avenue convenience store Wednesday night. Basil Hubble, 31, was shot to death by Jamerius Crennell, 20. Crennell has been charged with second-degree murder. (WDBJ 7) A man was brought to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Friday with non-critical injuries following a shooting in the 3100 block of Melrose Avenue NW. No one has been arrested and the Roanoke Police do not believe the public is in danger, but they continue to work to determine if the victim had been specifically targeted. (WDBJ 7) The second annual Roanoke Cattle Baron's Ball, which featured a live band, dancing, food, and an auction, was held on Saturday, Oct. 2 to raise money for the American Cancer Society. (WFXR) Local nonprofit organization Blue Ridge Land Conservancy celebrated 25 years of natural preservation with a dinner celebration on top of Mill Mountain yesterday, and honored Mill Mountain Gardening Club for its efforts to maintain the foliage of the landmark.
