Western Springs Sees Lowest Virus Case Number Since July: County

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs saw the lowest number of new coronavirus cases in a week since July, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, the village had experienced 1,501 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with six new cases in the last week. The week before last, the village saw 13 new cases. For four weeks in June and July, the village's coronavirus case count did not budge. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 92 in Darien, 99 in La Grange Park, 104 in DuPage County, 105 in Hinsdale, 107 in Elmhurst, 113 in Clarendon Hills, 114 in suburban Cook County, 116 in Burr Ridge and 133 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,630,864, up 1.1 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 25,017. Nationally, 43.5 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 1.8 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 698,672 people have died from the virus in the United States.
