Good morning, people of Long Beach! It's me again, your host of the Long Beach Daily. Long Beach lost a 35-year-old and a 46-year-old man to homicides. Also, that artificial turf opening ceremony did not go unnoticed by critics. First, today's weather: Sun and areas of high clouds. High: 82 Low: 64. Here are the top stories today in Long Beach: The latest shooting occurred "near the intersection of 14th Street and Olive Avenue." A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times. The suspect fled. If you have any information, please contact homicide detectives Eric Thai or Juan Carlos Reyes at 562-570-7244. (KTLA)And, we had a stabbing "near Linden Avenue and Harding Street." Occurring in broad daylight, a 46-year-old man experiencing homelessness is the victim. Statements suggest that the victim and a "thin, middle-aged man" got into an argument that escalated. If you have information, please call homicide detectives Ethan Shear or Michael Hutchinson at 562-570-7244. (LB Post) The grand opening of the new artificial turf soccer field in El Dorado Park West was not without protests. While council member Stacy Mungo highlighted the importance of parks, critics considered the $3.1 million expense an example of "the current council's misplaced priorities amid other city needs." Notably present were Gerrie Schipske, who is vying for Mungo's job, Corliss Lee, president of the Eastside Voice, and Ann Cantell of Citizens About Responsible Planning. (LBReport) The gun buy-back event hosted by the LBPD took 250 guns off the streets. Officers consider it a successful event. There is no information yet if there will be another one anytime soon.
