ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw the lowest number of new coronavirus cases in a week since early August, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city had seen 5,023 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 44 from a week before. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced an increase of 75 new cases. As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst stayed the same in the last week, at 70. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.5 percent. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,630,864, up 1.1 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 25,017. Nationally, 43.5 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 1.8 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 698,672 people have died from the virus in the United States.
