Tips on finding lost cats and dogs

Description
Indoor cats usually don't travel very far. Go outside with a flashlight, especially at night and look under porches, house, sheds and nearby bushes. Put their bedding outside the door they escaped from or some of the owner's dirty clothing. Usually they will hide during the day and come out at night when it's quiet and safe. Leave the door or window they escaped from open and they will usually sneak back in. Leaving a trail of chicken broth or tuna juice from the yard back to the door helps too. Put flyers/posters up in 3 block radius. Ask neighbors to check in sheds and under porches. (Don't put the litter box outside, as that will attract other animals that may scare off your cat). Also, advertise on PawBoost, Facebook page Eugene Springfield Lost and Found Pets, NextDoor, and Craigslist Lost and Found section. Contact Greenhill and the emergency vet to put in a lost cat report. This is a good video about finding lost cats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2eCoC63B9I Dogs will usually try and circle back home. Put their bedding and or some of your dirty clothes by an open fence or cracked garage door so the dog has a safe place to come back to. Run a trail of chicken broth, tuna juice or liquid smoke from sidewalk back to house. Night time is when dogs like to travel when it's quiet and safe out. Call Emergency Vet on Qst and Eugene Police non-emergency number. Also leave a lost dog report with Greenhill. Post on Nextdoor, PawBoost, and Craigslist Lost and Found as well as their Pet section. Also post on the Facebook page Eugene Springfield Lost and Found Pets. Get flyers up in the neighborhood as soon as possible. It helps to have large picture of dog with Lost Don't Chase in big letters so they are easy to see when people are driving. I also like to put them on to neon poster board cut into quarters so it stands out. You can get poster board at Walmart, Dollar Store, or Michael's. Flyers can be made and ordered online at Office Depot or UPS. Important: Owners need to be careful of where they are walking so dog isn't following their scent all over the neighborhood and getting more lost. Walk in straight lines to and from your home----when dogs are in panic mode, the sense of scent may be the only thing they respond to. It's usually better to have someone else hang the posters.
