Description
The 48th Annual Rotary Lombardi Award Dinner and Presentation to the College Football Lineman of the Year After a brief absence, the Rotary Lombardi Award will be re-established as one of the premier awards in college football. The Rotary Lombardi Award will continue to be given annually to the Outstanding College Lineman. Just weeks after Coach Vince Lombardi’s death in 1970 from colon cancer, the Rotary Club of Houston was authorized by Vince Lombardi’s widow, Marie, to establish the Rotary Lombardi Award. As stipulated by Mrs. Lombardi, net proceeds from the Award activities are contributed to Cancer Research, Awareness and Children who cannot afford treatment to fight the disease that claimed the life of Coach Lombardi. Since the award’s inception in 1970, millions of dollars have been raised to help American Cancer Society’s programs of cancer research, public education and direct services to cancer patients. This exciting event will take place on December 8, 2021 at the Hilton Americas Houston and will feature the Four Finalist and their Coaches, past alumni and members of the sports media. A distinguished committee of over 300 of America's most prominent college football coaches, football writers, sports broadcasters, and previous Rotary Lombardi Award winners, participate in a three-tiered balloting process. Each year the selection committee selects twelve nominees, four finalists and the ultimate winner in balloting conducted by the accounting firm of KPMG Inc. All four finalists, their head coaches and sports information directors are brought to Houston for two days of visits with young cancer patients at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Texas Children's Hospital, Harris County's Burnet-Bayland Home, media interviews and local hospitality. The Rotary Lombardi Award winner is announced at the climax of the Award Dinner
