Description

Visit this historic building in East River Park and visit its present occupants - the Lower East Side Ecology Center! The East River Park Fire Boat House, home to the Lower East Side Ecology Center, was opened in 1941 under Mayor La Guardia and decommissioned by Mayor Dinkins in the early 1990s. The Alfred E. Moore Fire Boat is now moored at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Fire Boat House was acquired by the Parks Department soon after. The building remains as a testament to the former industrialism of the East River, while its present occupants strive to maintain the park and waterway's ecology. Meet the Ecology Center's box turtle, Bernie, and learn about beneficial plants that grow around the boat house through a seed saving activity. All are welcome to enjoy the gorgeous view of the Williamsburg Bridge from the Fire Boat House and East River Park. Open House NY Weekend provides visitors with a chance to enjoy both the past and present of this art deco gem. For more OHNY events check out their website. ABOUT THE LOWER EAST SIDE ECOLOGY CENTER The Lower East Side Ecology Center (Ecology Center) has been pioneering community-based models in urban sustainability since 1987.
