LA Family Suing MBTA After Malfunctioning ​Escalator Injures Them

BOSTON — A Louisiana family filed a lawsuit against the MBTA after a malfunctioning escalator left them with several bone fractures throughout their bodies and lacerations on their heads and faces. Also a defendant in the lawsuit was KONE, the company hired to maintain the escalator. Karson and Holly Bethay filed the lawsuit Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court, the Boston Globe reported. The Bethays and their two children took the Commuter Rail from Foxborough to Back Bay Station after the Patriots-Saints game. As the family went up the escalator to street level, it all of a sudden began going in reverse, sending nine people to the hospital. The family was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for their injuries and face a road paved with extensive and expensive rehab, according to the complaint. Joe Pesaturo, an MBTA spokesperson, said the malfunction remains under investigation. A KONE spokesperson told the Boston Globe, company officials are cooperating with the investigation. "Safety is KONE's top priority, and our thoughts go out to those who were injured," the company said/ "We continue to collaborate with MBTA to investigate the issue and recently learned of the pending lawsuit."
