Description

Come join us for a Sunday matinee screening of Spring and 3rd- the first installment of 0ur Soul of the City Tour sponsored by Elevate ATL Spring & 3rd is a ninety-minute documentary on the birth and evolution of the Black Arts movement in Atlanta, GA circa the early to mid-’90s. Although the Neo-Soul movement is often associated with Philadelphia’s Black Lilly-which produced such luminaries as Jill Scott, JazzyFatnastees, The Roots, and Ursula Rucker- Atlanta’s role in this cultural shift has been just as pivotal and influential. The documentary explores the contributions of black music, art, and culture emanating from a dilapidated building that sits blocks away from the Georgia Tech campus. And more importantly, we examine what happens when that epicenter of cultural consciousness in “The Black Mecca’ is met head-on with the deep pockets of institutional behemoths. Can corporate interest and long-standing southern traditions like the ‘juke joint’ co-exist? The film’s narrative unfolds through the first-hand accounts of the entrepreneurial visionaries of Ying Yang Music Cafe. You will hear from the artists, musicians, promoters, and hosts themselves as they share their individual stories that formed a larger collective effort in creating a platform that would produce standouts like India Arie, Anthony David, Donnie Johnson, Bone Crusher, and Lil' John Roberts.
