Description
WEST HAVEN, CT — West Haven police and school officials are warning students that there will be serious consequences for anyone caught participating in the TikTok challenges that are circulating on social media.
The TikTok trend involves the stealing, breaking or destroying of school property by students, who then upload videos of the acts onto the social media app.
Cases of vandalism have cropped up at schools around the country and elsewhere in Connecticut.
West Haven Superintendent of Schools Neil Cavallaro and Police Chief Joseph Perno issued a joint statement Friday that said the situation is being taken "very seriously."
"If any student is caught participating in these challenges, which suggest physical harm, sexual assault, vandalism, and theft, they will be subject to disciplinary action that could result in suspension, expulsion and event arrest," the statement reads. "The City of West Haven is dedicated to providing a positive and safe environment for our school district, and students are expected to take responsibility for their actions and obligations. These dangerous challenges will not be tolerated. We encourage our students and parents to refer to our district handbook which provides further details that affirm our mission."
