HARLEM, NY — Months after Congress passed the $1.9 trillion stimulus package to help the nation withstand the pandemic, funding is still being dispersed — and six health centers in Harlem are among those receiving money, U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat said. The six Harlem health centers are among nine in Espaillat's district receiving funding through the American Rescue Plan, the congressman announced this week. The funding will go toward "major health care construction and renovation projects" that will improve care outcomes, strengthen medical infrastructure, and fund projects like COVID-19 treatment and vaccination according to Espaillat, whose district also includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. Here are the Harlem health care centers that received stimulus funds: East Harlem Council For Human Services: $624,586Heritage Health and Housing: $548,521Settlement Health and Medical Services: $649,589Upper Room AIDS Ministry, Adult Care Center: $552,360Institute For Family Health: $1,764,329New York City Health and Hospitals: $1,899,266 The centers' capital projects include building new facilities, expanding and renovating existing facilities and buying new state-of-the-art equipment like telehealth systems, mobile medical vans and freezers for vaccine storage, Espaillat's office said. The Health Resources and Services Administration administered the grants, which focused on improving health equity in medically underserved communities. "Health centers are lifeline[s] for many of our most vulnerable families across the country, and this was made especially clear amidst the pandemic," Espaillat said in a statement.
