Woman Rescued From Fire, Rescuer Goes Into Cardiac Arrest

NASHUA, NH — Nashua Fire Rescue, police, and AMR ambulance responded to a reported house fire at 54 Forest Park Drive on Friday. While en route, units were advised there were possibly occupants still in the burning building. Responders arrived just after 6 p.m. and found fire and smoke coming from a single-story house. People from the neighborhood removed a 97-year-old woman from the fire, carrying her out in a chair. NFR Deputy Chief William Atkinson said one of the civilian rescuers went into cardiac arrest. Firefighters began CPR and AMR Medics took over on arrival. Additional ambulances were called to the scene to give medical aid to the occupant and another civilian. The occupant of the house and two civilian rescuers were transported to the hospital. One appears to have been in cardiac arrest, and the other with smoke inhalation. The fire was brought under control at just before 6:30 p.m. and firefighters worked to eject smoke from the house. The Nashua Fire Marshals Office is investigating and the NH Fire Marshals Office is also on scene.
