ELMHURST, IL — Two Elmhurst aldermen are asking the city to review the parking requirements for downtown apartments and condos to meet the concept of transit housing. Aldermen Mark Mulliner and Mike Brennan, who both represent Ward 7, noted the increase in multifamily housing in downtown Elmhurst in recent years, which they said calls for a look at parking requirements. The aldermen also said they also wanted to review parking regulations for apartment complexes outside of downtown. They noted the St. Charles West and Kenmore complexes have a requirement of 2.5 parking spaces per unit on average, which they said was too high. They said a standard of 1.25 to 2.25 per unit, based on the number of bedrooms, would be more appropriate. The aldermen suggested using the same guidelines for downtown complexes, but include a calculation for the total number of units and those that are studio, one bedroom, two bedrooms and three bedrooms. The full City Council will vote on the aldermen's request for a review at its meeting Monday. City officials say "transit-oriented" downtown housing, which is intended for train commuters, helps Elmhurst. It creates a new base of customers for downtown shops in a time when online shopping is becoming increasingly popular, they say.
