Here are the top stories today in Smithtown: A Nesconset family has filed a new lawsuit against a Smithtown group home run by the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) for neglecting and abusing their adult son, who has autism. Ralph and Donna Milano allege that their son Cory, 32, suffered a broken arm and leg, black eyes, staples in his head, and other injuries while living at the group home, where he has lived since age 17. The Milanos' lawsuit is now the second filed one filed against DDI in recent months. (News 12 Bronx) On Wednesday, Robert Rose was appointed as the new principal of Smithtown High School East by the Smithtown Central School District. Rose has been with the district for more than 20 years and spent the last 16 serving as the school's assistant principal. The outgoing principal, Dr. Kevin Simmons, was recently appointed as the school district's assistant superintendent for instruction and administration. (Smithtown Patch) A Medford man was driving while intoxicated on the westbound Long Island Expressway when he was involved in a crash that injured himself and seriously injured another person, police said. The crash took place in Hauppauge early Friday morning near Exit 57, and both drivers were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Nolan Grant, 57, was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at a later date. (Northern Highlands Daily Voice) Long Island resident Ibrahim Aksakal pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to commit health care and wire fraud between 2017 and 2020. Aksakal and five others were arrested in December 2020 in connection with a so-called "birth tourism" scheme, in which the suspects helped pregnant Turkish women fraudulently enter the United States to give birth and obtain birthright citizenship and medical benefits for their children. Aksakal maintained "birth houses" for these women across Suffolk County, including one in Smithtown. (FOX 5)America's VetDogs in Smithtown is sending a 9-week-old chocolate Labrador named Biscuit to spend a year with the NHL's Washington Capitals in preparation for becoming a service dog. Biscuit will train and socialize with staff, players, and the public before returning to Smithtown to begin his formal service dog training.
