Jobs

Lansing MI

Description

We are doing the landscaping work around the new McLaren Hospital located along Highway 127 East Lansing. The position is best described as a short-term assignment. This is outdoor manual labor. We start early in the morning and tend to work 50-55 hours a week. The $17.57/hr rate is calculated as follows $15.00 base rate + $2.57/hr vacation pay that is paid into your union hall account. You can with draw those funds from that account in one lump sum. Your base rate is times 1.5 for all hours over 40 per week. On average you should expect about 12.5 hours of overtime per week. Additionally you will receive a $1,000 bonus at the end of your 8 week assignment provided your work and attendance is satisfactory. Combining these figures is how we arrive at the estimate for 8 weeks of work as follows: $15/hr + $2.57 = $17.57 * 40 hours * 8 weeks = $5,622.40 for first 40 hours during your first 8 weeks $22.50 +$2.57 = $25.07 * 12.5 hours * 8 weeks = $2,507.00 for hours 41-50 during your first 8 weeks Bonus after completion of all 8 weeks with zero attendance issues $1,000 Total $9,129.40 Common questions and answers: Q. Which union and do I have to pass a drug test? A. Our laborers are members of LiUNA and more specifically local 1191. If you are not currently a member, or a member with a reciprocal agreement, you will need to join LiUNA to work on this project. According to contractor and union rules for this project, all employees must pass a drug test that includes testing for marijuana. Please do not apply for this position unless you know you will pass a drug test. If you think you might pass a drug test, you will be asked to go to your local drug store, like CVS, to buy a self-test kit to find out if you will pass. Q. What work will I be doing? A. This is manual labor. You will primarily be hand raking dirt, spreading mulch, planting small plants, and staking trees. Q. When will I work? A. The jobsite supervisor will set your exact start/end times. Starting time will be approximately 6:30 to 7:00 am and ending time could be potentially as late as 7:00 pm. Please do not apply for this position unless you are able to work these hours. Further, there could be hours for you to work on Saturday too. Q. Am I certain to receive all $9,129.40? A. Potentially, it could be more. It all depends on how quickly we are able to finish the project, the weather, and you. The project completion is our best estimate at this point. Work continues outside even if it is light rain. However, if it is a downpour there could be some time with no work. The site foreman decides if it is too wet to work not you. The part of the equation that is up to you is your attendance and work satisfaction. If you are late to work, or miss working days, then the $1,000 bonus will not be paid to you. If you prove to be a rather lazy worker and do things like stand around looking at your phone, you will not be paid the bonus. In fact, if you prove to be a slacker, you will be fired. Q. Are there deductions from the $9,129.40? A. There are the usual taxes that are taken out of your wages. Further, if you are not currently a member of the Laborer's Union LiUNA, or a reciprocal union, your dues to become a union member are subtracted from your first few pay checks. The union may also charge a small amount for administration of your $2.57/hr vacation pay as an administration fee. Q. Do I receive medical benefits? A. According to union rules, you will become eligible for medical health benefits after your first 700 hours. You will not reach this threshold during your first 8 weeks. Therefore, unless you are already a union member with a reciprocal health care agreement with LiUNA, you will not be eligible to receive health care benefits during this job. However, you will have the option of continuing to work on our other projects and do snow removal for us during the winter. Those projects and our snow removal contracts are in the Detroit Metro area. Q. Where do I interview and how to I apply? A. Send me an email that contains the following information: 1. Your phone number. 2. List any experience you have working outside 3. Be sure to detail any prior landscape work. 4. Tell us where you live. If you act fast enough, we may be able to interview on-site in Lansing today Friday October 1 in the late afternoon. However, do not go to the job site. Appointments are off-site at a nearby coffee house. There is a chance appointments may be on Monday in Lansing or at our main office in Romulus.
