Join us as we celebrate the life of Oscar Lemus by reflecting on artifacts and film at the Neal Marshall Center for Black Culture. The Pop Up Gallery and Movie Screening are the first and second parts of a three-part memorial weekend celebrating the life of Oscar Lemus. 7PM: Pop-Up Oscar Gallery (a curated collection of artifacts from Oscar's life)8PM: Memorial Service 8:45PM: Movie Screening / Fantastic PlanetPop Up Gallery The Pop Up Gallery is a staged collection of artifacts that celebrate Oscar’s personality, research, and personal relationships with us. This gallery is open to the public from 7-8 pm on Friday, October 8th. We encourage people who knew Oscar to bring an artifact for an informal display. You may contact Quinton Stroud ([email protected]) with questions. Memorial Service At 8:00 PM, friends and colleagues will introduce a film that set Oscar’s imagination on fire: Fantastic Planet (1973) by taking part in a memorial service. This will be an opportunity for individuals to make a statement of remembrance in Oscar’s name, sharing short reflections, anecdotes, and memories for the audience. If you would like participate as a speaker, contact Quinton Stroud ([email protected]) by Thursday, September 7 at 11:59 pm via email with the following subject header: Oscar Memorial Statement of Remembrance. Organizers will allocate time for each speaker based on requests. Movie Screening The run time for Fantastic Planet (1973) is 71 minutes; English subtitles will be enabled for the film by default. If event organizers can provide other accommodations to help support someone’s experience of the event, please send an email to Iris Bull ([email protected]) with the subject heading, “Oscar Memorial Accommodations,” and a detailed request. COVID InformationMonroe County has extended the public mask mandate for indoor spaces through October 31.
