Filmmaker Nelson Varas-Diaz documents heavy metal music and illustrates how the genre’s fans and musicians are evoking change
Filmmaker Nelson Varas-Diaz, a professor at Florida International University, has trekked through Latin America, documenting heavy metal music and illustrating how the genre’s fans and musicians use the power of music to evoke change in their societies. Whether inspiring support for rural schools in Guatemala, environmental activism in Ecuador, or work for peace in Colombia, metal music has become a form of activism that happens when the music’s extreme sounds and lyrics are combined with local concerns.
Donna Heffernan of the Socially Relevant Film Festival will be in conversation with the filmmaker.
