To celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day & honor the contributions of Gullah People to the SC through volunteer service and forest foraging. Join us to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day & honor the contributions of Gullah People to the SC Lowcountry through volunteer service, storytelling, mushroom cultivation, and forest foraging! Note: Registration required! This opportunity is reserved for College of Charleston students & the Environmental Conservation Corps at The Sustainability Institute. Celebrate & honor Indigenous Peoples' Day with the following activities: Volunteer with Gullah mushroom expert William 'Bubba' Green III to learn how to inoculate & cultivate mushrooms with methods he uses for his emerging business Mycelial Connection. Volunteer with Chef Tianna Powell to construct raised garden beds for her garden dedicated to her plant-based cooking and feeding the community through her business The Kitchen and affiliations with the Stone Soup Collective & Destiny's Community CafĂ©.Foraging Tour - Bubba will also lead a forest foraging tour to learn about edible mushrooms and plants, as well as the cultural connections of Lowcountry flora & fauna to Gullah history & traditions.Vegan Lunch & Storytelling - Lunch provided by Chef TKayaking & Biking (optional) at the Woodlands Nature Reserve; available for volunteers after the event ends.When: October 11, 2021, 10:00am - 4:00pm Where: The Woodlands Nature Reserve, 4279 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414 The Woodlands Nature Reserve is a 6,000 acre privately protected nature reserve with two conservation easements, located on Hwy 61.
